Introduction

The School of Science, Shenyang University of Technology was established in 1999, building upon the profound academic heritage and educational traditions of its predecessor, the Department of Mathematics and Physics. From its inception, the school has been committed to innovation in fundamental disciplines and the cultivation of interdisciplinary talent. Driven by cutting-edge theories in mathematics and physics, it aims to address major foundational scientific challenges, laying a solid theoretical groundwork for breakthroughs in engineering and industrial advancement. After over two decades of relentless progress, the school has evolved into a vital hub for fundamental research and talent development.

In terms of discipline and program development, our school has established a comprehensive three-tier talent cultivation system encompassing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. It currently offers three undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, and Applied Physics. Among these, the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program has been recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program, while the Applied Physics program has been designated as a Provincial First-Class Demonstration Program. Annually, the school enrolls over 180 undergraduate students nationwide, with the quality of admitted students steadily improving. At the graduate level, the school offers master’s programs in two first-level disciplines—Mathematics and Physics—covering six distinctive research directions closely aligned with national strategic needs and disciplinary frontiers. Additionally, the school boasts one independently established second-level doctoral program, completing the full-chain talent cultivation pipeline from undergraduate to doctoral education and providing a robust platform for high-level academic growth.

The faculty serves as the core driving force behind the school’s development. Currently, the school employs 90 faculty members, including 13 professors, 25 associate professors, 9 doctoral supervisors, and 47 master’s supervisors. Among them are 13 high-level talents, such as recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, “Xing Liao Ying Cai” Distinguished Teaching Professors, and Provincial Distinguished Teaching Professors and Outstanding Educators.

Research platforms are pivotal to the school’s innovative progress. Our school houses the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Composite Metal Nanomaterials and Magnetic Technology, which focuses on cutting-edge research in nanomaterials and magnetic technology. The laboratory undertakes numerous national and provincial research projects and has achieved a series of groundbreaking results in fields such as new material development. Furthermore, collaborative efforts are bolstered by several other research and teaching platforms, including the Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Provincial Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Physics, and the Mathematics Experiment Center. The total laboratory area exceeds 4,000 square meters, equipped with advanced instruments such as electron microscopes and high-precision spectrometers, with a total value nearing 20 million RMB.

Over the past five years, our school has deepened its commitment to teaching and research. We have one national first-class course, 24 provincial first-class courses, published two provincial outstanding textbooks, and established one provincial demonstration virtual teaching and research section, driving innovation in teaching methodologies. Our school has also been awarded two Second Prizes in National Teaching Achievements Awards and six Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. It has undertaken nine national-level projects and over 30 provincial and municipal research projects. Additionally, faculty members have published more than 200 high-impact research papers, with 16 of them listed as ESI Global Top 1% Highly Cited Papers.

Looking ahead, our school will remain guided by the university motto of “Self-Strengthening, Steadfast Action” and uphold its school ethos of “Seeking Truth and Embracing Pragmatism.” By fostering interdisciplinary integration between fundamental disciplines and emerging technologies, strengthening collaborative education models that merge research, teaching, and industry, the school is steadily advancing toward its goal of becoming a distinctive, nationally leading hub for talent cultivation and scientific innovation in fundamental disciplines.
