The School of Foreign Studies was established in 2002. Its history can be traced back to the years of 1949 and 1985 respectively when its predecessors (Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office and Department of Foreign Language Teaching) were established. After two decades’ development, our school has become a comprehensive institution that integrates teaching, research, and language services.
Our school offers an array of featured programs, courses and services It has 1 master’s degree program in international engineering and language services and 2 bachelor’s degree programs in English and Japanese. Other than that, we provide English as Foreign Language courses for undergraduates and graduates majoring in different disciplines. Apart from the aforementioned, the service we provide also includes language training, foreign affair consultancy and on-and-off-campus publicity of SUT.
Our school has 82 staff members, including 72 academic staff and 10 professional staff. The academic staff is composed of 2 professors, 25 associate professors, and 45 lecturers. Nearly 51% of them have the overseas visiting or studying experiences and some of them obtained their Master’s or Doctorate Degrees in the USA, UK, France, Germany, Australia and Japan.
Our school has garnered significant accolades. One of its English courses has been designated as National First-Class Undergraduate Courses and 14 of its English courses designated as Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses. In addition, the bachelor’s degree program for English majors has been recognized as a Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program construction site in Liaoning province. Over the past five years, our faculty have published more than 200 papers and more than 10 textbooks, have authored 18 books and hosted more than 50 major provincial research projects.
Our school owns advanced teaching facilities. These facilities include multimedia classrooms, language practice teaching centers, web-based language training labs and simultaneous interpretation training rooms and so on. They provide students with a good learning environment as well as a good platform for practice. In addition, it also has abundant language teaching materials and resources.
Guided by the motto of “advocate virtue and knowledge, pursue integrity, practice and cross-cultural learning” and based on the advantage of SUT in engineering, our school is committed to cultivating multi-skilled and applied language talents with engineering knowledge. Relying on the interdisciplinary Master’s program of “International Engineering and Language Services”, we have created a unique and diversified training path for cultivating language talents. This path helps provide students with more opportunities for their career development.
Due to its rigorous learning atmosphere, our school has reached remarkable achievements in its student affairs. It has been awarded such titles as “School of Excellent Learning Atmosphere” four times, the “Exemplary Organization of Student Affairs of Shenyang University of Technology” twice, and the “May 4th Red Flag Youth League Committee of Shenyang City”. In recent years, the employment rate of its graduates has remained above 90%.
Our school has achieved great success in developing international cooperation. It has launched various cooperative activities with universities in the US, UK and Japan. It has developed partnerships with Benedictine University, University of Derby, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies, Okayama Shoka University, and Josai International University. Our partnerships with these universities not only provide students with many exchange opportunities but also helps improve our internationalization level. So far, we have already sent more than 70 students to study in these partner universities via exchange programs.
Looking towards the future, our school will continue to uphold its tradition. We will strive to cultivate more outstanding language talents to serve Liaoning’s revitalization, in particular the revitalization of the old industrial base in Northeast China, and the realization of the second centenary goal.
