Undergraduate Program for English Majors

1 Overview:

The Undergraduate Program for English Majors (Code No. 050201) begin enrolment in 1996. This program is now a First-Class Undergraduate Program construction site and a demonstration major for ideological and political education in Liaoning Province. It offers students a broad education and addresses fundamental concepts of the English languages and literature. A creative curriculum with a wide range of transdisciplinary, theory and practice-based courses is provided, which covers English language, English literature, English-Chinese/Chinese-English translation, cross-cultural communication etc. These courses allow students to accumulate their disciplinary and transdisciplinary knowledge, enhance their practical skills in English, shape their global vision about the world, and improve their overall calibers.

This program focuses on cultivating students’ language practice abilities, shaping their international perspectives, and cultivating their Chinese sentiments. It applies a personalized module course settings to cultivate innovative and specialized talents. It not only enables students to master English language skills, but also equips them with the abilities to adapt to the multiple challenges brought about by the internationalization, digitization, and intelligence.

This program implements 5 C cultivating mode. The 5C stands for Cross-disciplinary Integration, Cognitive and Digital Empowerment, Cultural Communication and Promotion, Career-oriented Practice and Classroom Ideological Integration. This mode aims to enhance students’ comprehensive abilities, ensuring that they are capable of handling various professional positions such as language services, technology communication, business communication, etc. in a globalized and diversified environment.

In recent years, this program has reached significant achievements in its discipline construction. One of English courses has been designated as National First-Class Undergraduate Course and five of English courses have been designated as Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses in Liaoning province. It also won two second prizes and two third prizes for teaching awards in Liaoning Province. Relying on the master’s program of international engineering and language service, this program integrates language ability with technology engineering and business communication. Through this “language+” cultivating mode, this program provides students with broader academic development and career development opportunities.

2 Program Goals

The program aims to educate English majors into specialists with well-rounded development. Studying English as a major prepares students for a diverse range of professional fields, including translation, education, trade, AI, international engineering and international business with their English expertise and cross-cultural communication skills. English majors also pursue careers in tech companies and other ventures such as education, translation, interpretation, language service, cultural transmission and so on as they are holding strong background in natural science, civil engineering and technology.

The program holds five goals that ensure students:

1: Have solid language proficiency in English listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills, language analysis ability, cross-cultural expression ability, and English literature appreciation ability; and can freely use English for professional communication and expression in various professional environments.

2: Possess cross-cultural communication skills, be able understand and analyze social phenomena from different cultural backgrounds, master cultural communication strategies, enhance cultural confidence, and be competent in international communication, cultural dissemination, translation, and education.

3: Be capable of interdisciplinary innovation and application, be able to combine knowledge from disciplines such as artificial intelligence, business and trade, or engineering technology, creatively use English to solve complex problems, enhance language service capabilities, and adapt to the professional needs of the digital and intelligent era.

4: Be able to handle practical work in translation, business, education, international communication and other fields, master industry norms and professional skills, possess teamwork ability, professional ethics and problem-solving ability.

5: Be capable of lifelong learning and career development, be able to adapt to social development and career changes, continuously optimize personal career planning, enhance comprehensive competitiveness, and achieve sustainable development.

3 Core Courses

Integrated skills of English, English listening, English speaking, English reading, English writing, English Public Speaking and Debate, British Literature, American Literature, Introduction to Linguistics, English-Chinese Translation, Chinese-English Translation, Brief Introduction of Chinese culture, History of Western Civilization, and Cross-cultural Communication.

Undergraduate Program for Japanese Majors

1 Overview

The Undergraduate Program for Japanese majors (code 050207) began enrolment in 2010. It belongs to the discipline of foreign language and literature. It covers the basic courses of Japanese, including Japanese language, Japanese literature, Japanese culture, translation, and related Japanese studies. These courses allow students to be able to use Japanese as a tool and possess high humanistic literacy and communication skills, both locally and nationally.

The curriculum system of this program covers a variety of courses and practical activities. Comprehensive courses include basic Japanese and advanced Japanese. Skills courses such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Professional courses involve business Japanese and engineering Japanese. General courses cover innovation and entrepreneurship, humanities and arts. The practical activities include business etiquette, industrial cognition, extracurricular activities, internships, and thesis. This curriculum helps to equip students with the required ability to work in translation, education, management, and other fields, or choose various development paths such as studying abroad, pursuing a master’s degree, or starting a business.

This program has established partnerships with universities such as Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies and Okayama University of Business in Japan. These partnerships have enhanced students’ Japanese language proficiency and international perspective through short-term study abroad and “2+2” training programs. Students have achieved excellent results in Japanese language skills competitions, speech contests, and essay contests both domestically and internationally, demonstrating their practical and innovative abilities.

2 Program Goals

They are capable of working in education, research, foreign enterprises, government agencies, and other fields related to Japanese language education, translation, and management.

1. Have good physical and mental qualities, humanistic literacy, professional ethics, and dedication, practicing socialist core values, and possessing professional ethics and social responsibility in the context of cultural integration between China and Japan.

2. Master solid basic Japanese language skills and application abilities, familiar with Japanese linguistics, literature, and culture, possessing cross-cultural communication and international business skills, and able to creatively solve practical problems in Sino Japanese communication.

3. Are able to comprehensively apply Japanese language and cultural knowledge, analyze and solve complex problems in this professional field, propose targeted countermeasures or solutions, especially in the fields of Sino Japanese economic and trade, cultural exchanges, etc.

4. Are capable of logical reasoning and innovation, able to combine the characteristics of Japanese language major, discover, analyze and solve problems in the fields of language, culture and cross-cultural communication, and put forward unique insights.

5. Pay attention to international trends, understand Japanese and global development trends, respect cultural diversity, possess cross-cultural understanding skills, and have an international perspective to promote cultural exchanges between China and Japan.
