Ⅰ. English

English program atarts from 1966. Courses are offered for English majors who are taught and trained to be qualified mainly in the areas such as English teaching, foreign trade, and translation. The core courses provided include English Literature, Linguistics, Inter-cultural Communication, Translation and English Culture, as well as English Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, More optional courses about linguistics, translation and English literature and culture are available for students, such as English Lexicology, Sight Translation and English Rhetoric. Besides, English for special purposes, such as English for engineering and technology, are also available.

All the teachers are qualified and well-experienced, and they all have been abroad to study either for a degree or for a short-period.

Diversified activities, such as English Play Competition and English Speech Contest, are organized to broaden their horizons and enrich their lives. Moreover, famous scholars are invited regularly to give lectures and reports to the students so that they can keep up with the forefront development in the studies of English.

Ⅱ. Japanese

1. Our Objectives

Our primary objective is to cultivate our students into high quality Japanese talents. To achieve this objective, we set six goals to train our students. The details are outlined as follows:

Excellent mastery of Japanese basic knowledge and skills,

Ability of putting Japanese knowledge into practice,

A good command of Japanese literature and linguistics,

Good Mastery of knowledge relative to Japanese culture, economy and business,

Demonstrated abilities of translation, interpretation, intercultural communication and spirit of innovation, and

Broad professional kills for career development in foreign companies or foreign affair-related enterprises or institutions.

2. Our Staff

We have 10 teaching staff, including 3 associate professors and 7 lecturers. Among them, there are 2 PhD and 6 Masters. 90% of our people have the overseas visiting or studying experiences.

3. Major Courses

Basic Japanese, Advanced Japanese, Japanese Conversation, Japanese Listening & Speaking, Japanese Extensive Reading, Japanese Writing, Japanese Translation: Theory & Practice, Japanese Interpreting: Theory & Practice, Japanese Literature, and Academic Writing.

4. Our Advantages

Our advantages can be summarized in three aspects. Firstly, we combine social practices with our teaching. We organize various extra-curriculum activities for our students, such as Japanese speech competition and Japanese cultural festival. We also arrange for our students to participate in intercultural communication with native speakers by way of emails, social practice and forum, which will be helpful to improve their Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing and interpreting abilities. Secondly, we integrate basic science and engineering knowledge into our course design. We combine basic science and engendering courses such as electrical engineering and mechanics with our course design. This design helps us to equip our students with not only excellent Japanese language ability, but also a good command of profession-oriented skills.Thirdly,we make full use of the international partnerships with overseas universities to create exchange study opportunities for our students. So far, 24 students have been sent to Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies in Japan for exchange and 20 students have gone to our other partnered Japanese universities to complete their “2+2” study.
